Candles have been used for centuries for magic and rituals
One of the easiest forms of magic is the magic of candle burning.
It is simple because it uses little ritual and a few ceremonial artefacts.
Candles can be purchased at a variety of places and its rituals can be practiced in any room in the home.
Most of us have performed our first act of candle magic by the time we are two years old.
Blowing out the tiny candles on our first birthday cake and making a wish is pure magic.
This childhood custom is based on the three magical principals of concentration, will power and visualization.
The child who wants his/her wish to come true has to concentrate (blow out the candles), visualise the end result (make a wish) and hope that it will come true( will power).
The size and shape of the candles you use is not important.
Dos and Don’t about Candle Magic.
- Do use “virgin” [brand new] candles for candle magic.
- Do use a new piece of paper to write down what you want. Eg. New car, new romance, job, healing etc.
- Do not use a candle that has been used for other purposes. Eg. Used on dinner table or as a night light. There is a very good occult reason for not using anything but new materials in magic. Vibrations picked up by second-hand materials or equipment may disturb your workings and lesson their effectiveness.
- Do not use matches to light the candle. The sulphur in matches is a banishment tool, and will lesson the effects of the candle magic or make it completely useless.
- Do use snuffer or wet your fingers and pinch it out.
- Do not blow out the candle, as this will dissipate the energy.
Some people prefer to make their own candles for ritual and magical use.
It impregnates the candle with your own personal vibrations.
Specialist shops sell candle wax and moulds together with wicks, perfumes, and other equipment.
The hot wax is heated until liquid and then poured into the mould through which a suitably sized wick has already been threaded.
The wax is then left to cool and once is this has occurred the mould is removed, leaving a perfectly formed candle.
Special oil-soluble dyes and perfumes can be added to the wax before the cooling process is complete to provide suitable colours and scents for a particular magical ritual.
Craft shops which sell candle-making supplies can also provide do-it-yourself books explaining the technicalities of the art to the beginner.
Once you have bought or made your ritual candle it has to be oiled or 'dressed' before burning.
The purpose of dressing the candle is to establish a psychic link between it and YOU.
By physically touching the candle during the dressing procedure, you are charging it with our own personal vibrations and also concentrating the desire of your magical act into the wax.
The candle is becoming an extension of your mental power and life energy.
Engrave the candle with the name of the person or thing you wish to affect, the person's date of birth or star sign.
When you dress a candle for magical use, imagine that it is a psychic magnet with a North and a South pole.
Rub the oil into the candle beginning at the top or North end and work downwards to the half-way point.
Always brush in the same direction downwards.
This process is then repeated by beginning at the bottom or south end and working up to the middle.
The best type of oils to use for dressing candles are natural ones which can be obtained quite easily.

Write down your ritual and what you want to achieve on a virgin piece of paper.
You can also use colour paper which matches the candle.
Write your request on the paper. As you write down what you want to accomplish through candle magic-- a new job, healing for a friend, a change of residence, a new love affair, etc.-- visualise your dream coming true. See it, smell it, taste it, hear it, feel it.
Visualise the circumstances under which you might be offered a new job, imagine your employer telling you that your salary has been increased or conjure up a vision of your perfect love partner.
Meditate briefly before lighting the candle to help still your mind and bring your desire into focus.
When you light the flame, state your intention out loud, in simple, clear words.
Next, carefully fold up the paper with your request on it, in a deliberately slow fashion.
Place the end of the folded paper in the candle flame and set light to it.
As you do this concentrate once again on what you want from life.
When you have completed your ritual, allow the candle to completely burned away.
Do not blow it out, as this dissipates the energy.
You do not need to stay with the candle after the ritual, but make sure that is safe and that red-hot wax will not cause damage or fire.
Never re-use a candle which has been lit in any magical ritual. IT should only be used in that ritual and then allowed to burn away or be disposed of afterwards.
Time your candle-burning ritual to correspond to the phases of the moon.
You can find them out by looking on the weather page of your newspaper or by looking at most calendars.
To bring something into your life, do your rituals when the moon is waxing.
To rid yourself of something, do it when the moon is waning.
If there is any residue remaining afterwards it can be recycled by melting it down or bury it in the back yard.
Whichever method you use, it should be accompanied by the following words (silent or aloud); "Thank you for aiding my magickal purpose.
Now return to the elements from which you came.
Go with love to love".
If you are conducting a magical ritual which involves more than one person (e.g. an absent healing for a person some distance away) then the other people can be symbolically represented during the ritual by another candle.
All you need to do is find out the subject's birth date and burn the appropriate candle for that zodiacal sign.
One final point. As with any type of spell, always add the words "... should it be for the greater good of all concerned.
So Mote It Be!"
You can repeat the rituals as often as you like, but don't become obsessive.
Candle burning is a way to help you stay open to the possibilities of life.
It may seem that your particular wish didn't come true, but who knows?
Maybe it is because something better is coming along in your life.
